Multiple–true–false (MTF) questions are an alternative format that combines the benefits of multiple-choice (MC) questions with enhanced diagnostic potential (Brassil et al., 2019). Students evaluate each statement following a question stem as true or false, which helps detect mixed conceptions by requiring assessment of both correct and incorrect statements. MTF questions reduce reliance on test-taking strategies and align well with open-ended question results, showing similar response patterns (Hubbard et al., 2017). While they can’t fully replace free-response (FR) questions, MTF questions can match FR difficulty and reflect similar thinking (Kubinger & Gottschall, 2007; Wilcox & Pollock, 2014). Studies have also found a strong correlation between MTF and FR responses (Hubbard et al., 2017).
