Although the chemicals of a dead organism remain present for some time, they no longer undergo regulated conversion. No non-living object—stone, metal, water, or artificial machinery—exhibits metabolism. Thus, metabolism represents the chemical essence of living organisms. It is the continuous, regulated transformation of biomolecules that allows organisms to grow, function, adapt, reproduce and sustain themselves in changing environments.
